This calculator is for employees in the United Kingdom, for the tax year from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. It takes your gross pay and deducts income tax, National Insurance and, if you choose, a workplace pension and student loan repayments, using the rates published by HMRC on gov.uk. Scotland has its own income tax bands; National Insurance is the same across the UK.

How it is calculated

  • Personal allowance: £12,570 tax-free, reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000.
  • Income tax in England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% on the first £37,700 above the allowance, 40% up to £125,140, 45% above. In Scotland: 19%, 20%, 21%, 42%, 45% and 48% bands.
  • National Insurance: 8% of pay between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, 2% above.
  • Student loans: 9% of pay above £26,900 (Plan 1), £29,385 (Plan 2), £33,795 (Plan 4) or £25,000 (Plan 5); postgraduate loans 6% above £21,000.

Example

On a salary of £35,000 in England, income tax is 20% of £22,430, which is £4,486, and National Insurance is 8% of £22,430, which is £1,794. Take-home pay is £28,720 a year, or about £2,393 a month. To convert the same pay between hourly, weekly and yearly without tax, use the salary calculator.

What it does not include

Results assume the standard tax code 1257L and National Insurance category A, with tax and NI spread evenly over the year. They do not include benefits in kind, the High Income Child Benefit Charge, the marriage allowance, or tax relief on pension contributions you pay from net pay (relief at source). Your payslip can differ month to month; for a precise figure, check your tax code with HMRC.
