Dogs do not age at a steady rate, and they do not age at one rate for every dog. A puppy reaches something like human adolescence in its first year, then the pace slows, and it slows least in the biggest breeds. That is why one multiplier cannot work, and why this calculator asks for adult size before anything else.
Why "multiply by seven" is wrong
The rule of seven has been around since the 1950s and appears to come from dividing a human lifespan of about 70 by a dog lifespan of about 10. It fails at both ends. A one-year-old dog is sexually mature and close to full size, which no seven-year-old child is. And a 16-year-old chihuahua would come out at 112, while a 10-year-old great dane, which is genuinely ancient for its breed, would come out at only 70.
How it is calculated
- The first year counts as 15 human years and the second as 9 more, so a two-year-old dog of any size is about 24. This is the rule the American Veterinary Medical Association publishes.
- After the second birthday each dog year adds a fixed number of human years, and that number depends on size: 4 for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large, 7 for giant. The medium figure is the AVMA rule as published; the other three are scaled around it so that the senior stage begins near a human-equivalent 60 whatever the size.
- Life stages follow the 2019 AAHA canine life stage guidelines, which divide a dog's life into puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior and end of life, and define the senior stage as the final quarter of expected lifespan. Because expected lifespan falls as size rises, senior arrives at about 11 years for a small dog and about 6 for a giant one.
- The second estimate comes from the epigenetic clock published by Wang and colleagues in 2020: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It was derived from DNA methylation in 104 Labrador retrievers aged 0.1 to 16 years, so it takes no account of size and is only defined from one year up.
Example
A four-year-old labrador is a large dog: 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then 6 + 6 for years three and four, giving 36 human years. The epigenetic clock puts the same dog at 16 × ln(4) + 31 ≈ 53. The gap is not an error in either method. The size rule is built to be easy and to reflect breed lifespan; the clock tracks molecular change, which runs fast early and then flattens. Both agree the dog is a healthy adult, not a youngster.
Why size matters more than breed tables suggest
Larger dogs age faster in almost every measure, and nobody is certain why; faster early growth and higher levels of growth factors are the leading explanations. But within a size band, breed still dominates. UK life tables built from more than 30,000 deaths put average life expectancy at 11.2 years overall, yet 12.7 years for a Jack Russell terrier and 4.5 years for a French bulldog. If you know the breed, its own life expectancy beats any size band.
What to do with the number
Use it to decide when to change the care, not to worry. Portions change with the life stage too, which the raw dog food calculator works out from current weight. The practical thresholds are the life stages, not the human equivalent: a giant breed needs senior screening from about six, a small dog from about eleven. Twice-yearly exams, baseline blood and urine work, weight and dental checks and a look at joints and cognition are what the AAHA guidelines ask for at that point.
