Goats are pregnant for about five months, 150 days on average, and most does kid within five days either side. Because so much of kid growth and the risk of pregnancy toxemia is packed into the last six weeks, the important dates are the ones counted back from kidding: when to raise feed, when to give the CD&T booster, and when to have the kidding pen ready. This calculator lays them out from a single breeding date.
How it is calculated
- Kidding date = breeding date + 150 days. Miniature breeds (Nigerian Dwarf, Pygmy) average closer to 145; standard dairy breeds (Nubian, Alpine, Saanen, LaMancha) about 150; Boers 148–152.
- Normal range is 145 to 155 days. Kids born before about 140 days rarely survive without intensive care.
- Does carrying triplets or more tend to kid a day or two early.
Example
A doe bred on October 15 is due around March 14, with a normal window of March 9 to 19. If she does not come back into heat around November 5 she is probably settled; an ultrasound from mid-November confirms it and can count kids from early December. Feed increases from late January, the CD&T booster goes in around mid-February, and the kidding pen should be ready by the start of March.
Signs kidding is close
The two ligaments running from the spine to the pin bones on either side of the tail soften and then seem to vanish in the last 12–24 hours, the most reliable sign. The udder becomes tight and shiny, the vulva swells, a string of clear or amber mucus appears, and the doe paws, stretches, and often becomes vocal and clingy. Once she is pushing hard, a kid should appear within about 30 minutes; twins usually follow within 10–20 minutes of each other.

When should I give the CD&T booster?
Four to six weeks before the due date, so the antibodies are in the colostrum. Kids then get their own first dose at 5–6 weeks.
How many kids do goats have?
Twins are the most common, singles and triplets are frequent, quads happen. First-time does usually have one or two.
