Indian universities and the CBSE grade on a 10-point CGPA (cumulative grade point average), while US universities and employers expect a GPA out of 4.0. There is no official formula between the two. This converter gives the simple proportional estimate that most people use, and shows how professional evaluators approach Indian grades, so you know how far the estimate can go.
How it is calculated
- Proportional GPA = CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 (or × 5 for a 5-point scale).
- CBSE indicative percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This rule comes from a CBSE circular for school grades.
Example
A CGPA of 8.0 is 3.20 out of 4 by proportion, or 4.00 out of 5. By the CBSE rule it is 76.0%. For a US-style GPA across several courses with credit hours, use the GPA calculator.
What WES and other evaluators do
Credential evaluators do not divide by 10. The WES iGPA calculator, for example, asks for every course and its grade and converts them one by one, so the result can differ from the simple proportion. In its guide, WES reads Indian marks of 60–69% as a B and 70% or more as an A; the University of Washington reads 60% or more as an A. If a university asks for an evaluation, only that evaluation counts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert CGPA to GPA?
Only approximately. There is no official CGPA to GPA formula. The simple proportion CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 is a fair first estimate; for applications, universities often ask for an evaluation by WES or a similar service, which converts course by course.
What is a 3.0 GPA in CGPA?
About 7.5 out of 10 by simple proportion (3.0 ÷ 4 × 10).
What is a 3.7 GPA in CGPA?
About 9.25 out of 10 by simple proportion (3.7 ÷ 4 × 10).
How much is 2.5 GPA in CGPA?
About 6.25 out of 10 by simple proportion (2.5 ÷ 4 × 10).
