Most US high schools and colleges report a grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, while many schools and countries grade in percent. This calculator turns a percentage into the letter grade and grade points of the standard unweighted scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0.
How it is converted
- 90–100% is an A (4.0), 80–89% a B (3.0), 70–79% a C (2.0).
- The D range differs: Florida law sets it at 60–69%, the College Board table at 66–69% with F below 65%. Choose the one your school is closer to.
Example
A grade of 85% is a B on both scales, worth 3.0 grade points. To average several classes into one GPA, convert each class and use the GPA calculator, which weights them by credit hours.
Plus and minus grades
Many schools split each letter into plus and minus grades, such as A− = 3.7 or B+ = 3.3, with their own percent cutoffs. Neither table used here has them, so an 89% counts as a B, not a B+. The College Board itself notes that its table is a general guide and “not necessarily a formula for calculating your true GPA”.
Frequently asked questions
What is 70% in GPA?
70% is a C, worth 2.0 on the 4.0 scale. It is the lowest C on both the Florida scale and the College Board table.
Is 90% a 3.5 GPA?
No. On both scales here, 90% is the bottom of the A range and counts as 4.0. A 3.5 sits halfway between a B and an A. Schools that use plus and minus grades set their own cutoffs, so check yours.
What is 75% of a 4.0 GPA?
As a grade, 75% is a C, worth 2.0 grade points. If you mean the arithmetic, 75% of 4.0 is 3.0, but GPA is not converted that way: the letter grade decides the points.
Is a 80% a 3.0 GPA?
Yes. 80% is the lowest B, and a B is worth 3.0 on the 4.0 scale.
