DayHoursRegularOvertime

A time card adds up a week of shifts and splits the hours into regular and overtime so you can check a payslip or quote a job. Rules differ by place, so the calculator lets you set the weekly threshold, the overtime multiplier and whether daily overtime after 8 hours applies.

How it is calculated

  1. Total = sum of the seven daily entries. Enter hours already net of unpaid breaks; the hours calculator converts start and end times to net hours if you need it.
  2. Daily overtime (if switched on): any hours over 8 on a single day count as overtime.
  3. Weekly overtime: regular hours beyond the weekly threshold (40 by default) count as overtime. Daily overtime hours are not counted twice.
  4. Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier.

Example

Monday to Wednesday 8 h, Thursday 9 h, Friday 9.5 h: 42.5 h. With a 40-hour weekly threshold and no daily rule: 40 regular, 2.5 overtime. At $20 an hour and 1.5×: $800 + $75 = $875 gross. With daily overtime on, Thursday and Friday give 2.5 overtime hours by themselves and the weekly rule adds nothing, so the total is the same here but would differ for a week with one very long day and several short ones.

Rules to know

In the US, federal law requires 1.5× after 40 hours a week for non-exempt employees; a few states add daily overtime. In the EU the Working Time Directive caps the average week at 48 hours, and overtime premiums come from national law or contracts rather than a single rule. Salaried and exempt workers often get no overtime at all. When in doubt, the threshold and multiplier fields let you match your contract.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime calculated?

Hours beyond a threshold, usually 40 a week in the US, are paid at a premium, typically 1.5 times the normal rate. Some states also count hours over 8 in one day. Set both in the calculator to match your rules.

Does the calculator handle lunch breaks?

Enter net hours for each day, with unpaid breaks already removed. To convert start and end times minus breaks into net hours, use the hours calculator.

What is time and a half?

Overtime paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, overtime is $30 an hour. Double time is 2×, used for some holidays and very long days.

Is the pay shown before or after tax?

Before. This is gross pay. Taxes, insurance and other deductions come out of it and depend on where you live.
