This calculator is for Australia and the Australian dollar. It uses the all-groups consumer price index of the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the weighted average of the eight capital cities, with annual averages of the quarterly index from 1949 to 2025.
How it is calculated
- Equivalent amount = amount × (CPI in the target year ÷ CPI in the starting year).
- Total price change = that ratio minus one.
- Average annual inflation = ratio1/years − 1.
Example
A$30,000 in 2004 is equivalent to about A$52,940 in 2025: prices rose 76.5%, an average of 2.74% a year. The US inflation calculator does the same for the US dollar.
Before 1966
Australia switched from pounds to dollars in February 1966 at 2 dollars to the pound. Amounts from before 1966 are entered here in dollars: double a pound amount first. The ABS now publishes a monthly CPI; this calculator keeps the long quarterly series, averaged over each year.
