This calculator is for the United Kingdom and the pound sterling. It uses the consumer prices index (CPI) published by the Office for National Statistics, the measure the Bank of England targets. The CPI starts in 1988; for earlier years the calculator switches to the ONS long-run composite price index, which goes back to 1800, and says so in the result.
How it is calculated
- Equivalent amount = amount × (index in the target year ÷ index in the starting year). Annual averages are used.
- Total price change = that ratio minus one.
- Average annual inflation = ratio1/years − 1.
Example
£1,000 in 2000 is equivalent to about £1,904 in 2025: CPI prices rose 90.4%, an average of 2.61% a year. The US inflation calculator does the same for the dollar.
CPI, CPIH and RPI
The ONS publishes three main measures. CPI is the headline rate. CPIH adds owner occupiers’ housing costs. RPI is an older index that usually runs higher and is still used in some contracts and in index-linked gilts. The long-run index used here before 1988 is based on the RPI, so very long comparisons can come out a little higher than a CPI-only figure would.
