This calculator is for the euro area as a whole. It uses the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) published by Eurostat, the measure the European Central Bank targets, with annual averages from 1996 to 2025. The euro area index follows the membership of each year, from 11 countries in 1999 to 21 with Bulgaria in 2026.
How it is calculated
- Equivalent amount = amount × (HICP in the target year ÷ HICP in the starting year).
- Total price change = that ratio minus one.
- Average annual inflation = ratio1/years − 1.
Example
€1,000 in 2000 is equivalent to about €1,693 in 2025: prices rose 69.3%, an average of 2.13% a year. The US inflation calculator does the same for the US dollar.
One currency, different countries
Inflation is not the same in every euro country. For one country, its own HICP or national CPI is more precise. Euro notes and coins arrived in 2002; for 1996 to 1998 the index measures prices before the euro existed, in the currencies of the time.
Frequently asked questions
How much was 1 euro worth in 2000?
One euro of 2000 buys what about €1.69 buys in 2025. Prices in the euro area rose 69.3% over those 25 years, an average of 2.13% a year.
What is the current inflation rate in Europe?
Measured by the annual average HICP, euro area prices in 2025 were 2.1% higher than in 2024. Eurostat publishes a flash estimate for each month at the start of the next one.
Can I use this for one country, like Germany or Spain?
Only as an approximation. Each country has its own inflation rate, published by Eurostat as a national HICP and by its statistics office as a national CPI.
